Woke up at 4:30 AM today to do a practice tri run through Pacific Grove. I was worried I couldn't get a ride to Monterrey, but luckily it all worked out. We met at Sports Basement in the Presidio at 6 AM. Heather, our captain and her husband were able to load my bike on the car. For some reason I thought it would be warm in Monterrey. I was so wrong. I was freezing in my bike shorts! We got in our wetsuits and hopped into the freezing water (about 60 degrees) to warm up. I think everyone went to the bathroom in the water at the same time. Lovely, eh? They call the swim a kelp crawl for a reason. Basically tall grass "kelp" is in the water and we pull ourselves through the water. There were open areas where we could swim, but a lot of it had the kelp. It wasn't as bad as I thought and the kelp is actually distracting from how much salt water is in your mouth. We did two loops. AFter each loop we get out - run around the beach and hop back in the water for the 2nd loop. I think that's how they count how many laps we swim. After the swim, we hopped on our bikes to do a practice ride. It was a lot flatter then the rides in Marin. I actually like the practice course we did last weekend, then the real one. It wasn't that hilly compared to rides we've done in Marin. We did 3 loops yesterday and do 4 loops for the real race. EAch loop is 6 miles. I was feeling a little low energy today and was riding and running slow. After the bike, we did a transition to run. It's definitely called Bricks for a reason. My legs felt so heavy as I trudged along attempting to run. It takes me a good 2 miles before I'm in the mood to run. After the first loop, I pushed myself harder. For one, I didn't want to be the last person to finish and somehow I got a second wind. I was pretty hungry after the first loop so I ran to the transition area and had some goo. Usually, I avoid that as it's just a sugar high, but it may have helped me with the loop.
Well, 3 weeks to the tri. I pretty much feel like I did it. Now, just to push a bit more and I'll do it! wahoo.
